Biography

Patrick Dennis Combs was born on October 29, 1966 in Newport, Rhode Island. He is a former major league pitcher who played for the Philadelphia Phillies between 1989 and 1992.

Combs, who statistically has drawn comparisons to pitcher John Keefe, attended Alief Hastings High School, and later attended Baylor University, where he had a 3.8 grade point average in 1988, and Rice University.

In 1988, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round (11th overall). Being a talented 6'3" 200 pound pitcher, the Phillies thought they found gold. He had one "golden" season-that being his first professional year. In 1989, he reached every level of professional baseball, all the way from A-ball to the Major Leagues. He showed what he could do-for the Clearwater Phillies, he went 2-1 with a 1.30 ERA in 6 games. For the Reading Phillies, he went 8-7 with a very respectable 3.38 ERA in 19 games. For the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Red Barons, he went 3-0 with a 0.37 ERA. On his final journey through the ranks that year, with the Phillies, Combs went 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in 6 games. The baseball world was a-buzz, because people thought he was going to be great.

He was in the starting rotation the next year with the Phillies, and his season was nothing more than mediocre. He went 10-10 with 4.07 ERA, with 86 walks and only 108 strikeouts. He had gone through a sophomore slump. His once golden outlook was melting away.

Combs never quite pulled out of that slump, as his next two seasons were even worse. He had an ERA of 7.71 in his final season.

Two times in his professional career Combs walked more than he struck out. In 1991, he walked 43 and struck out 41; in 1992 he walked 12 and struck out 11.

Currently, Combs resides in Richmond, Texas.
